It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing on October 9, 2026 of Johnny Byrd, 93, of Pageland, South Carolina. He was a short term resident of White Oak Manor in Lancaster, SC. Johnny was a man of few words but his gentle and kind heart was felt by all that knew and loved him.
Johnny was born on February 1, 1933 in Kershaw, South Carolina to the late Charlie Wells Byrd and Lizzie Morgan Byrd.
He served in the United States Air Force from 1951 – 1955. He was a long time employee with Dupont in Camden, SC until his retirement. He worked several part time jobs after retirement; one of which was a bus driver for children with disabilities and special needs, which brought him great joy. Johnny was a member of the Masonic Lodge #239 in Jefferson, SC, as well as, the American Legion Post 92 in Pageland, SC.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Mungo “Pat” Byrd, two sons, James E “Butch” Deese and Robert A. “Tony” Deese; a grandson, Joshua Allen Deese, two brothers, George Franklin Byrd Sr., and Melvin Eugene Byrd; and many nieces and nephews.
Johnny is survived by a son, Bruce T. “Tommy” Deese and his wife, Melba; a daughter, Janice Deese Morris, and grandsons, Jamie Deese, Jonathan Rivers, Jay Rivers (JT Ballard), and Justin Deese.
Services for Johnny will be held at 2:00pm on Monday, October 12, 2026 at Pageland First Baptist Church, 203 W Pigg St
Pageland, SC 29728. Johnny will be laid to rest in the church cemetery immediately following the service.
Visitation will be held in the church fellowship hall prior to the service from 1:00pm until 1:45pm
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Masonic Lodge #239 in Jefferson, SC or to Pageland First Baptist Church in Pageland, SC.
