As a new day began to unfold beneath a moonlit sky, a gentle breeze accompanied Roxie on her journey to heaven’s shores. With hearts full of love, we take comfort in knowing that the Lord welcomed her with open arms, saying, “Well done, my good and faithful servant. Welcome home.”
Born on October 27, 1940, in Kannapolis, North Carolina, Roxie was one of nine children born to John Oscar and Paris Abigail Hunter Griffin. Lovingly named for her grandmothers, Martha Carolyn Griffin and Roxie Abigail Plyler Hunter, she carried a cherished part of her family’s history throughout her life. She grew up in Tradesville and attended school in Buford, graduating with the Class of 1958.
Roxie began her working career in 1958 at Eagles’ Five and Dime, where she worked for Mrs. Evelyn Dutton. She remained there until 1960, when she married the love of her life, Charles T. Williams. Together, they shared more than 50 years of marriage. After the birth of her children, she went to work at Springs Mills in Lancaster, where she remained until her retirement in 2002.
Roxie had a gift for making others feel loved, often through the simplest and most meaningful things. She enjoyed sewing and making lap blankets for those dear to her, tending her flowers, and filling her kitchen with the comforting smells of cooking and baking. Her fruitcakes and strawberry layer cakes were famous among those fortunate enough to enjoy them. To her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her cucumber sandwiches and homemade biscuits will always taste like Grandma’s love.
Her family was her greatest earthly joy, and her beloved church family held a place close beside them. Her faith guided the way she lived, loved, and cared for others. Affectionately known as the church’s “card missionary,” Roxie shared encouragement and kindness through thoughtful cards that reminded people they were loved and remembered. She served her church in many roles over the years, giving generously of her time and talents. The decorating committee was especially dear to her heart, allowing her to share her love of beauty with the church she treasured.
Roxie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles T. Williams; her parents; her brothers, Carson, Harold, Oscar, and Rance; and her sisters, Luna Anne, Nancy, and Frankie.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Norma Jean Williams-Coleman and Deanna W. Kearns (James), both of Pageland; her grandchildren, Abigail Hendrix (Alan Moore) of Indian Land, South Carolina, and Elizabeth Catoe (Daniel), Joshua Kearns (Carrie Bradley), and Stacy Griffin (Joey), all of Pageland; and her great-grandchildren, Eli Catoe, Asa Catoe, Chloe Kearns, Brantley Kearns, Lyndon Griffin, and Atleigh Griffin, all of Pageland. She is also lovingly remembered by her sister, Linda G. Wallace of Pageland, and her special friend and neighbor, Carolyn Gwin.
The family will receive friends on Friday, October 30, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Holland Funeral Service in Pageland. A service celebrating Roxie’s life and faith will be held on Saturday, October 31, at 2:00 p.m. at Union Hill Baptist Church, 1209 Union Hill Church Road, Pageland.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Gentiva Hospice, especially nurses Butch and Madison, aide Sharon, and social worker Sharon, for their compassionate care and invaluable support.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Gentiva Hospice of Chesterfield or to Union Hill Baptist Church, c/o Brenda Sullivan, 268 Cato Heights Lane, Pageland, SC. Donations to the church should be designated for the decorating committee, a ministry Roxie served with love.
Though her family will miss her beyond measure, they rejoice in the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ and take comfort in knowing that her love will remain with them, until they meet again.
